Hello. You've arrived at Téa's blog, where she likes to muse about her findings and observations from the world of fun graphics, the web, and whatever else that she finds inspiring (or annoying) enough to post about.

In other words, you get all of Téa's verbal offerings here, as opposed to the usual resource downloads that can be found on the main part of this site.

Colorfilter has an identity crisis

Posted on October 31, 2006 at 09:43 pm under Tea's Musings

I hereby admit that I have a thing about checking my stats to find out who has linked to me and what they have to say about my site. It’s not always interesting, since I generally just arrive at a long list of links where mine is just one of the sites tucked in the page somewhere. Every so often, I’ll stumble on to something that gets me really annoyed because I’ve found that my downloads were once again either stolen and claimed as someone else’s or they were being hotlinked. But even that’s all pretty typical.

There are two things, though, that I can’t help but be baffled by.

The name change

There must be something in the name “Colorfilter” that provokes people to change or add on to it, because a large amount of people crediting me have this tendency to change it. I often get:

  • Color Filter with that space in the word
  • Color Filters with the space and the s
  • Colour Filter with the space and the u in color
  • Colour Filters with the space, the u, and the s
  • Color Filtering with the space again and the ing

Color Filter, by far, takes the winning spot as to how often I see it. I’m beginning to think there’s more out there who’s linking to me with that rather than Colorfilter. The big question: Why? Perhaps it’s a natural reaction that makes people want to split the name up? I’m aware that very little people are reading these random musings of mine, but if you see this and you’re one of the people who do refer to me in something other than Colorfilter, please enlighten me with your reasons. I really am curious. And yes, I’d prefer it if it was changed to just Colorfilter without any spelling alterations or spaces added. :p

The houshold name syndrome

Aside from the name changes, it seems my textures are also going through an identity crisis of sorts. That’s right… they’re no longer being called textures. I’m seeing people refer to my textures as “Color Filters” a lot, which I always find to be odd. So instead of seeing a tutorial say “Add these textures by Colorfilter”, I get “Add these color filters by Color Filter”. I always have this urge to jump in say “No no no! They’re not color filters! They’re textures and I’m Colorfilter not Color Filter!” but then I feel bad saying anything so I keep quiet while I see this happening more and more.

It does make me wonder if most people think Colorfilter is a name that is directly related to what my site is about. But hey, if I look at it another way… it’s almost like people calling photocopying machines as a Xerox machine when “Xerox” is actually just the brand and not the actual product? Ah, Colorfilter is becoming a household name. (laughs) Feel free to smack me upside the head now, dears.

For me at least, Colorfilter and Tea are practically household names… if Livejournal counts as a household. ^^

I find it amazing how many ways people can turn my forum username (BrightSideoftheDark) into nicknames. It’s very confusing when you have people calling you Brighty, BrightSide, DarkSide, BrightDark, and etc.

Heh, I linked you as Color Filter, but I just changed it.

@ Brighty: Ha, that’s very sweet of you to say. ;p I’ll take LJ. You know what they say! First Livejournal, next the world. (laughs) Thanks for allowing me to dream a little. ;)

I’m going to assume you call yourself Brighty most of the time though? When you think about it, DarkSide is a rather amusing variation of your name. Somehow, I’m finding it difficult to associate you with the dark side too.

Thank you very much for changing it (and for dropping in and commenting)! May I ask what prompted you to use Color Filter? I’m really rather curious why my site’s name in particular always gets split up… hmm.

I guess it was general semantics. I saw the name, and I assumed that it was made up of two words.

Normally, I look at the web page title, to write down the name, but I guess I didn’t think to do that when I wrote up my credits page. I had linked you in two places (now three) and in the other, I had written Colorfilter.net.

5default avatar Brighty | Sun November 05, 2006 at 11:37 pm

(waves the LJ Goat flag) But then again, Livejournal IS the world. XDD

Officially the nickname is Brighty, but depending on where I go, other names stick. DarkSide has only been used once. ^^

@ Brighty: In truth, I’m already grateful that so much people on LJ are using my resources regardless of the rest of the web world. I do this for my own fun, so it always makes my day that people find them useful. :) And I like the name Brighty. It’s chippy!

@ Corinne: Thanks for linking to me and also for changing the name. In a way, I do understand why some may automatically just split Colorfilter up into two words, but I guess I still find it odd especially when I don’t really see it happening to other sites with names that are made of two or more words...heh.

I have a problem at times when I’m doing up my credits page and stuff. As I’m used to the british spelling of the word ‘colour’ I sometimes mistype the site name but I always spell it the right way as ‘colorfilter’. hehe. And to think 7-odd years of writing HTML codes would have taught me that. hehe.

I can get quite anal about misnaming things or people. Especially if someone blatently mispronounces a close friend’s name.

Ok i have just re-checked if i’m one of those guilty ones. Lucky me, i put ‘Colorfilter’ and, I hope you don’t mind ‘Pattern from colorfilter.net ‘, if you do, tell me, i’ll change to something that you prefer.

I totally understand your feelings. I own a site called “DigiCreation”. Amongst the variations, I’ve seen “Digi Creation”, “Digi Creations”, “Digicreations”, “Digicreation”, “DiGi Creation” and its variants. I also have a site called “Chiba (Just a Token Male)”; my favourite so far as “Chiba Just a Token Mail. I even went as far as to specify it in the introduction that if spelling the name is too difficult a task, they may cut and paste it as they see it around the site, but nobody read introductions.

I suppose people only read what they want to read.

I have linked you with “Colorfilter.net” as it’s what I see on the title bar which tends to be what I go by (unless they’re filled with special characters that make a picture). As HM mentioned, if “Colorfilter” is what’s correct, I will gladly correct it.

I had pretty much assumed that was why some were spelling colorfilter that way. It’s just ironic when the link itself is correct, but then it’s listed as something else!

Hm said:

Oh, I definitely don’t mind that in the least and you’ve got my site listed correctly anyhow. :) I must seem like a naming nazi of some sort, or at the very least, ungrateful to all those who are linking me funny. It’s not how I meant to come across!

Veve said:

That one gave me a good laugh. Ha, I’m not surprised your note in the introduction didn’t work. Don’t you find it funny how people complain when you don’t have a site introduction, yet when it’s there, no one reads it anyway? But that’s an entirely different topic altogether…

Anyhow, “Colorfilter.net” is perfectly fine! Thank you, by the way, for linking to my site. To me, regardless what the site’s name is, I sometimes find it the safest to just list the URL- especially when site “names” tend to change at the creator’s whim (quite often too, I might add).

I think it’s because a lot of other websites have more than one word in them in their URIs and those words are split up. Um actually I don’t think what I just said made sense. Ok, so say there’s a website called http://morethanoneword.com (probably not a real website) well, you wouldn’t link it as “morethanoneword” you would link it as “More Than One Word”, so with that same reasoning in mind, people probably think “Oh, http://colorfilter.net, ok, I’ll link it as ‘Color Filter’”. Something like that, just my two cents.

I have you down as Colorfilter.net, since you did say.
“Hello and welcome to Colorfilter.net...” on the index page. I’ll be more than happy to change it if you like.

I once had a site called ButterFLY (a bit strange, I know) and I made sure to point out that the FLY was indeed supposed to be capitalized. That helped bunches.

13default avatar Airelin | Mon January 29, 2007 at 03:22 pm

I’ve linked it correctly, though I originally linked:
<a href= “http://www.colourfilter.net/">Colorfilter</a> That’s probably from the years of visiting nothing but British Buffy sites, though. It was corrected immediately.

Yay! No CAPTCHA. I can never read those.

14default avatar sharon | Sun February 18, 2007 at 05:47 am

I agree what Tracey said. It’s probably because in English grammar, it’s kinda hard to stick two words together. Color and filter are two words and it might be awkward for people to just stick them together as one word. So that’s my (and Tracey’s) theory ;)

Hey there. Are you the same one who owned/owns the LJ: http://colorfilter.livejournal.com? I thought you may be related to it somehow, so I just thought I’d ask… cool site, by the way. =D <3

16default avatar Nicole | Sat March 03, 2007 at 10:14 am

I love your layout! Are you using wordpress?

17default avatar Nathaniel | Thu May 31, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Very nice site. It’s my first time here and I can tell you that I’ll be back more often for updates and to read your musings. I’ll be linking you to my site once I get my site (it won’t be long). Thanks for providing a nice, clean resource site.

18default avatar Empressbeck | Tue June 12, 2007 at 03:57 pm

Lol. People have really started referring to textures as ‘color filters’ now? You should feel honoured xD
I know what you mean about the site name thing, though. I go through that all the time ...
*goes off to check that she has linked you as Colorfilter*

19default avatar Miotas Sisceal | Wed January 16, 2008 at 03:58 am
